Bird's Eye Chillies from Kenya

African bird's eye chillies are small, intensely hot and in steady demand from sauce makers, spice packers and retail buyers. Getting a consistent supply comes down to how carefully they are graded.

African bird's eye chillies graded for export from Kenya

Key points

  • Specify colour split, length range and firmness — not just "bird's eye".
  • Punnets for retail, 2–5kg cartons for wholesale and processing.
  • Available year-round, with peak volumes in the dry seasons.

The varieties we supply

Bird's eye (African), cayenne, long green chilli, and habanero on request. Each has a different market: bird's eye for heat and sauces, cayenne for drying and powder, long green for fresh retail, habanero for specialist buyers.

How chillies are graded

Grading looks at colour, length, firmness and stem condition. A red-only consignment costs more than a mixed red and green one because more picking passes are needed.

Give us your acceptable ranges and tolerances up front and we will grade to them every week.

  • Colour: all red, all green, or an agreed percentage split
  • Length range in centimetres
  • Firmness and stem condition
  • Tolerance for blemish or off-size fruit

Packing options

Retail buyers usually take punnets, labelled to their own specification. Wholesalers, sauce makers and spice packers take 2–5kg cartons. Ventilation and fill weight matter — overfilled cartons heat up and lose firmness in transit.

Building a weekly programme

Chilli supply responds to rainfall and picking labour. Committing to a weekly volume lets us plan harvest with growers, which is why programme buyers get steadier quality and pricing than spot buyers.
