Decide whether you need a grower, exporter or sourcing agent
A grower-focused relationship may suit a narrow product programme, while a sourcing agent may help coordinate several varieties or product lines. An exporter’s value lies in managing the agreed shipment tasks. No model is automatically best for every buyer.
List the gaps in your own team’s capacity: grower selection, grading checks, custom packaging, documentation or freight coordination. Choose a company willing to state which gaps it can cover and which remain your responsibility.
Review Zavora’s export service scope to compare it with the support your programme needs.
Use a product-fit scorecard
Evaluate each company against the same written order: product range, available grades, pack formats, traceability process and capacity to discuss your destination. Ask for evidence or a clear confirmation rather than awarding points for generic phrases such as global quality.
For flowers, test whether the proposal specifies colours, stem lengths and counts. For herbs and chillies, assess variety, net weight and handling requirements. Do not assume the term agricultural exports means the company supplies every crop.
- Product fit: can it quote the exact items?
- Specification fit: does it define grade, quantity and packaging?
- Operational fit: are handovers and responsibilities clear?
- Commercial fit: are prices, exclusions and claims terms written down?

Separate legal controls from buyer certifications
Plant-health certification, food-safety requirements and private assurance standards address different questions. Ask which requirements are mandatory for your destination and which come from your customer. Request evidence for the actual supplying operation where relevant.
An exporter describing certification support is not the same as proving the company or every grower holds a specific accreditation. Verify certificate scope and validity independently; never treat an association logo as a shipment approval.
Compare the complete proposal
Check whether both proposals use the same unit, packing specification, named delivery point and freight assumptions. A cheaper carton may hold less net produce or exclude costs included elsewhere. Ask who handles destination clearance and collection.
Consider the supplier’s communication about uncertainty. An honest explanation of harvest availability, routing constraints or permitted substitutions is more useful than an unconditional promise the company cannot substantiate.
Choose a manageable starting programme
Agree a trial or initial programme with measurable acceptance criteria and a documented feedback process. Check quality on arrival and review performance over several orders before expanding quantities or adding products.
Zavora is based in Nairobi and handles sourcing enquiries for flowers, herbs and chillies, with cashew nuts listed separately. The right partnership starts with confirming fit, not assuming unlimited capacity or access to every destination.

Frequently asked questions
- How should I compare Kenyan agricultural export companies?
- Use the same product specification and compare documented sourcing, packing, traceability, documentation, freight responsibilities and total quotation scope.
- Is a sourcing agent different from a grower?
- Yes. A grower produces the crop; a sourcing agent coordinates supply against buyer requirements. Ask which export tasks the agent also handles.
- Does export experience replace destination compliance checks?
- No. Each product and destination still requires current import eligibility and documentation checks.
