Flower Exporters in Kenya: A Guide for International Buyers

International buyers evaluating flower exporters in Kenya should start with the bouquet or wholesale specification their customers need. Variety names alone do not define an order: colours, stem lengths, bunch counts and packaging matter too. This guide helps importers organise a clear enquiry and compare the full export service.

Match the flower range to your customers

Zavora’s flower catalogue includes single head roses, spray roses, carnations, summer flowers and foliage. Single head and spray roses serve different bouquet needs; foliage and summer flowers need their own variety and count specifications.

Ask which varieties and colours are available for the proposed order date. Do not assume every pictured bloom is available in commercial quantities, or that unspecified substitutions will suit your customers. List acceptable alternatives explicitly.

Build your selection from the flower and produce catalogue and request current availability before finalising quantities.

Compare the same grade and box content

Stem length, head condition, straightness, leaf condition and defect tolerances should be part of the specification. Agree the stage of opening suitable for your market and expected receiving process rather than relying on an undefined premium grade.

Ask for stems per bunch, bunches per box and box dimensions. A lower box price may simply cover fewer stems. Mixed-variety boxes should include an itemised packing list so your team can reconcile the order on arrival.

Ask how quality and packing are coordinated

The exporter should explain how flowers are graded, bunched, sleeved and protected against compression or movement. The pack must match the flower type and the journey; adding more stems is not an improvement if it damages heads or restricts the agreed handling plan.

Ask who checks the packed consignment and reports deviations before dispatch. Agree how labels identify products and lots for receiving checks and any later quality investigation.

Review Zavora’s flower grading, consolidation and packaging services when discussing your quality standard and assortment.

Check documents and the destination entry point

Confirm import requirements with the authority or clearing agent in the receiving country. KEPHIS is the Kenyan plant-health authority, but documentation must match the destination’s requirements for the particular flowers.

Europe is not one import system for every country, and requirements across Africa, Gulf markets and Asia also differ. Share the exact country and airport in the enquiry. A destination page is a place to start planning, not proof of a guaranteed route or approval.

Set up a first delivery and feedback routine

Before shipment, agree the written assortment, count, delivery point, payment terms and claims process. Arrange prompt collection and suitable storage, then reconcile the packed counts and inspect flower condition on receipt.

Use photographs and specific observations to discuss any differences. Subsequent orders can be adjusted for your buyers’ preferences, but neither a trial nor a sample establishes guaranteed future volumes or vase life.

Send your flower specification through the quote request with the destination airport and required arrival date.
